SurvivorsUK at UK Black Pride 2024
SurvivorsUK were thrilled to once again be back at UK Black Pride gathering this past weekend in London. It was an honour to be there representing male and non-binary survivors of sexual abuse, and to celebrate the collective breadth of experiences, culture and expressions in the Black and POC LGBTQ+ community.
It is impossible to overlook the recent weeks of racial hatred, Islamophobia and anti-immigrant violence that has been trying to tear apart our communities across the UK. But once again, experiencing UK Black Pride – the good vibes, delicious food, sharing ideas – was a reminder of the strength and joy that occurs when we come together to celebrate both our similarities and uniqueness, making our communities more resilient.
Our wonderful team members created a safe space at our stall to speak about the healing work we do with survivors, pick up copies of our BAM poetry anthology and take part in our Black Pride quiz prize draw. We would like to share some of their reflections on the day here:
Sy Loney, Group Work Manager
“Following the horrendous scenes we have all witnessed in the last couple of weeks along with prejudice, discrimination, and marginalisation faced daily by LGBTQIA+ people of the global majority in the UK, it was crucial for Survivors UK to stand in support and solidarity for UK Black Pride. The event was incredibly empowering, with a palpable sense of love, warmth, freedom, and justice. Our work is not done, and we commit to bringing communities together to celebrate, spread joy and PRIDE in our authentic selves!”
Peter Royal, Support Counsellor
“This was my very first time attending a Pride event. Leading up to the event, I felt quite anxious based on recent events in the UK and being a person of color. But from the moment we entered the space, it felt amazing. Seeing so much representation in one event highlighted the solidarity and unity of the LGBTQIA+ community. Several organisations and attendees came over to find out more about what we do and to speak about the importance of our work. I feel privileged to work for such an amazing charity that specialises in an important field.”
Gary Williams, CEO
“After nights of ugly hatred we have seen good people reclaiming the streets, and Black Pride is a powerful expression of love, resilience and determination. Dr Martin Luther King said it best: ‘Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.’”
Rochelle Mightly, Case Worker
“What an amazing energy! We were there to introduce ourselves and our services to potential new clients and honestly, it was a real privilege to be there. Freedom, love, laughter and pure joy! The smiles on everyone’s faces were by far the best token of the day… Until next year!”
